After the Yankees game, Suzyn Waldman — herself a breast cancer survivor — informed us that Bobby Murcer had been taken at age 62 by brain cancer.
Bobby opened his career with the Yankees in 1965 and closed it with them in 1983, splitting five seasons in between with the Giants and the Cubs.
He was a fine outfielder, and by all accounts, a great human being. He was a broadcaster with Steinbrenner’s YES Netowrk, and he had said that the only thing he wanted to do was to live to see the opening of the new Yankee Stadium next fall. The man didn’t even make it to the All Star game, the first in Yankee Stadium since he retired from playing.
Godspeed, Bobby.
